Abstract
Ushûl Fiqh is a discipline that contains essential principles for understanding the Qur’an. Without it, a mufassir (Qur’anic interpreter) risks making errors in interpreting the Qur’an. This study aims to examine the importance of Ushûl al-Fiqh and its application in Qur’anic exegesis from the perspective of Sheikh Muhammad bin ’Umar Nawawi Al-Jawi. The research focuses on one of his works of exegesis as the primary data source. The study adopts an inductive sequential method by analyzing the entire content of Marah Labid li Kashfi Ma’na Al-Qur’an Al-Majid, compiling materials related to the research topic—specifically, legal verses—and connecting interrelated variables to draw conclusions. The data collection technique employs a literature study, which includes data reduction in accordance with the research theme, data display, and verification. Sheikh Muhammad bin ‘Umar Nawawi Al-Jawi’s application of Ushûl al-Fiqh principles includes utilizing dalâil al-syar’iyyah (sources of Islamic law), namely the Qur’an, Sunnah, ijmâ’ (consensus), and qiyâs (analogical reasoning). In the process of istinbâth (deriving legal rulings), Sheikh Nawawi extensively applies qawâ’id ushûliyyah lughawiyyah (linguistic principles of Ushûl al-Fiqh), particularly in the method of tarjîh al-adillah (weighing conflicting evidence).
